When disaster looms, you must leave quickly. What do you grab on the way out of the house?
My family confronted that question as hurricanes bore down on us. It forces you to consider what is vital to you.
So, what would you take?
It depends on your age.
- Most would take their cell phones and leave their Social Security card behind. Those who are younger take a laptop and shoes rather than medicine.
- Those in their forties grab photo albums and clothes.
- Baby Boomers clutch jewelry over water or food.
But what came in above any of those things were items that meant something. It ranges from a grandmother’s necklace to “the urns holding loved ones’ remains.”
As fires, tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes become more threatening, you must take stock of what you want to keep.
The Bible calls that your “treasure,” the things your heart cannot part with.
So, what are your treasures?
Jesus asks the same question because the answer reveals more than what is in your hands.“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21, NIV)
Your heart determines your treasure, not your hands. When eternity beckons, what will be the most important possession of your life? Is it your soul or your stuff?
After all, you get to determine what is most important. What is your treasure?
