Cody Townsend often skied the Sierra Nevada. He knew it. But on one day it felt off.
Even though the snow had fallen, it hid a crust of old hard snow underneath. It was perfect conditions for an avalanche.\
The Avalanche Center issued the warning that conditions were unstable.
Townsend headed home, not wanting to endanger himself or his wife. But others didn’t see the danger.
A group of 15 backcountry skiers plowed on. Four professional guides on the tour saw the signs and knew the danger.
The group had not gone a mile when someone shrieked. A snowbank the size of a football field came loose. It roared down the mountainside at astonishing speeds. No one could outrun it.
Rescuers came hours later to find nine bodies.
Something happens when you ignore the warnings. Peter ignored them and then endured the aftertaste of denial. Cain refused to listen to God, causing his brother’s blood to stain the earth.
Jesus pulled no punches. People will come to tear you away from faith. So, listen.
“See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them.” (Luke 21:8, ESV)
The warning is there for your benefit. Don’t ignore it because your soul is too important.
When someone yells danger, listen!
