Many who shop at IKEA understand the dilemma. They get a bunch of pieces. Once they put it together, they will have the furniture purchased.
You can say, “I made this,” but it would not be accurate. It would be better to say, “I put this together from the parts in the box.”
When men “create,” they take too much credit. We live in an inventive world. We credit Edison with “creating” the light bulb or Marconi with “creating” the radio.
No one creates but merely puts together parts given to them.
C. S. Lewis observed:
“Creation, as it is for God, must always remain totally inconceivable to man. We only build. We always have materials to build from.”
That is what makes the raising of the Bible’s curtain so powerful. Moses wrote.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:1–2, ESV)
From the galaxies that spin through the universe to the molecules of air that fill your lungs, God created the elements. We only rearrange the carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen to “create.”
So, remember, God is the creator. We are assembling IKEA furniture.
