Herb Turetzky only wanted to attend a basketball game. Instead, he found a calling.

In October 1967, Herb went to Teaneck Armory in New Jersey. He was there to watch the inaugural game of the New Jersey Americans. The Americans played in the now-defunct American Basketball Association.

The coach was an old high school friend who greeted him with a request. “Herb, can you help us out and keep score of the game tonight?”

Since he had nothing else to do, he said yes. He sat in a wooden folding chair at half court and started filling in lineup cards.

That happened over 2000 games ago, and Herb is still keeping score. He has moved with the team to three different cities. In eight arenas through the years, Turetzky has put up the same wooden chair as he did that first night.

Sports Illustrated said he is “the courtside constant.” A simple yes led to a lifetime of service.

Too many Christians focus on what they can get. They consume while passing up opportunities to serve in God’s kingdom. With each opportunity, the answer is “no.’

Jesus walked along the sea, eyeing various fishermen. He wasn’t looking for muscle but the right men. And a few, he called. What amazes me is the response of these men.

“And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.” (Mark 1:20)

In short, they said yes, and with it, found destiny.

The Lord goes through his church looking for those to serve. He calls and waits.

Will you say “yes?”
