We gobble down turkey on Thursday to settle in for a nap. We relax.

If you really want to relax, express gratitude.

Gratitude is the “wonder drug” of human existence. It decreases stress hormones and keeps the brain from aging. Researchers at the London School of Economics found that gratitude expressed is a powerful motivator. People have meaning and purpose when others appreciate what they do.

Then, why do we give gratitude lip service?

Perhaps we are conditioned to look at the black side of life rather than seeing the blessings of life. Many times, when wading through news media and social media, it is hard to find the silver lining. While we have tremendous blessings, we focus on a single deficiency.

Paul counseled asking God for what we need without forgetting what God has already given.

….do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:6)

Because gratitude does not come naturally, we have to perfect the practice (not the attitude) of gratitude. Spend time every day thinking of a few things for which you are thankful (and why).

It is hard to be miserable while giving thanks.
