Be careful at the beach. The sharks are closer than you think.

One time, sharks were in deeper water. However, researchers around Miami have learned that humans have attracted them through the bright lights and the city noises.

Where the people are, the sharks go.

It’s not much different for God’s people. The Bible tells of the dangers to humankind by another kind of shark, the devil. He appears in a garden paradise, in a wilderness where Jesus seems to be the lone resident, and in the courtyard of the Jewish high priest.

The spiritual shark waits for the moment of weakness. He lays in wait for David’s lingering stare. When a servant girl catches Peter off guard and asks, “You were with him,” the shark circles the prey. When Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, examines his shredded clothes, the shark guides him toward a lie.

Peter said:

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8, ESV)

The danger is closer than we imagine. So, never grow complacent about your ability to resist.

When on vacation, keep an eye out for sharks. That’s wise for everyday living as well.
