Some teach lessons with words. The better teach with examples.
That’s what a billionaire did at a college graduation.
Robert Hale, Jr., made a fortune with his company, Granite Telecommunications. His wealth allowed him the freedom that few have. He could have a personal jet, a massive yacht, or lavish trips.
Instead, he spoke to the graduates of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Instead of dispensing the trite “follow your passion” speech, he focused on something more important.
On cue, he pointed to security guards who brought duffel bags packed with envelopes of cash. He said that as they crossed the stage to get their degrees, each would receive two envelopes. One envelope contained $500, which was a gift they could keep.
But each would receive a second envelope. It contained $500 for them to give to someone in need.
In the pouring rain, the students stood in applause.
Hale’s message was a simple one. “The greatest joys we have in our life has been the gift of giving. Our community and our world need our help now more than ever.”
Paul would agree. He told the Corinthians:
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7, ESV)
The happy man is the one who gives of his life, his means, and himself. The only thing you keep in life is what you give away.
So, what have you given today?
