Feeling anxious about what lies ahead is all too common. The uncertainty of the future can weigh heavily on our minds. We worry about falling ill and possibly losing our lives during this pandemic. Job security is dwindling, and the fear of unemployment looms over us.

For older individuals, concerns about financial stability until the end of their days can be overwhelming. And what if they were to develop dementia? Will they become a burden to their children?

These fears consume us. They steal away our joy, leaving us in constant unease.

But amidst all this, a story from the Old Testament brings me immense comfort.

In Genesis 22, God presents Abraham with an unimaginable request: sacrificing his son, Isaac. What astonishes me is Abraham’s response.

He doesn’t complain, argue, or question. Instead, he rises early the next day, ready to journey to Mt. Moriah. The details of their conversations during that trip remain unknown.

Then, Isaac inquires about the sacrifice. Abraham can only reply, “The Lord will provide.”

The Hebrew writer sheds light on Abraham’s mindset.

“He believed that God was even able to raise him from the dead, figuratively speaking. So, he did receive Isaac back.” (Hebrews 11:19, ESV)

Abraham had unwavering faith that God would care for him and fulfill His promises.

Now, how does this ancient tale speak to our anxieties?

I have started to look up to Abraham as a role model. If he could trust God with his son’s life, why can’t I trust God with something less critical? Regardless of the circumstances, Abraham firmly believed that God would remain faithful to His promise.

But do I?

Do I possess even a fraction of the faith that Abraham had in God’s care for me? If He is truly God, then He is undeniably reliable.

So, amid my greatest fears, I find solace in the step-by-step journey Abraham took up Mount Moriah. If he could embark on that journey and wholeheartedly trust in God, why can’t I?

When we wholeheartedly believe that God will walk alongside us in our future, regardless of the fears that consume us, we will find tranquility. In moments of anxiety, let us follow Abraham’s footsteps up the mountain.

Let us find comfort in his unwavering faith and allow it to guide us towards a place of tranquility.

Robert, you always seem to write about something I really need. Abraham trusted in God so fully and Isaac was so trusting. When I am so worried I try to overcome it by telling myself how God never fails me, how He never leaves me, how I must leave everything to Him because He is in control and I just need to let go and not worry…He is here, there and everywhere. Thanks!
