We all live in harmony with the seasons–both the ever-changing weather outside and the seasons of life within us. This captivating text delves into the parallel between the seasons of the natural world and the phases we encounter in our own lives. It offers profound insights and invaluable guidance on how to adapt and make the most of each season.

A mere ten days ago, the scorching heat in Texas had us sweating profusely. But just like clockwork, fall gracefully made its entrance, transforming my wardrobe from shorts to cozy sweatshirts within a week.

I once had the privilege of knowing a wise elder from my second church. He departed from the Gulf Coast and settled in the Texas Panhandle, where a dilapidated barbed wire fence was the only barrier against the elements.

Curious about his decision to move to such a desolate place, I asked him why. His response was profound: “I yearn to experience all four seasons.”

A few years later, he invited me to visit his church and deliver a series of sermons throughout the week. So we embarked on a journey, passing by vast feedlots and endless flatlands until we reached the town.

The series commenced. On Monday, the weather toyed with us, subjecting us to temperatures reaching 100 degrees. But then, everything changed.

Tuesday brought forth a torrential rainstorm, followed by swirling dust that coated rain-soaked cars.

Wednesday, snow gracefully blanketed the landscape, only to be followed by warm sunshine and temperatures in the 70s on the third day, the weather one yearns for throughout the year.

I couldn’t help but write to my friend, expressing my surprise, “When you spoke of experiencing four seasons, you were absolutely right. I didn’t expect them all within the same week!”

Just like the capricious weather, our lives can transform in the blink of an eye.

Life is an extraordinary journey through diverse seasons. We evolve, mature, and find love. Children enter our lives; one day, they spread their wings and leave the nest. We shed tears of sorrow for the loss of loved ones while simultaneously rejoicing in the arrival of precious grandchildren.

As Solomon eloquently penned:

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to mend; a time to be silent, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1–8, ESV)

These seasons bring unique challenges and joys akin to the ever-changing weather.

Each season demands its own response. In the endurance of summer, we must persevere. In the bountiful harvest of fall, we relish in the goodness surrounding us. In winter’s cold embrace, we prepare ourselves for what lies ahead.

God expects us to live harmoniously with the season we find ourselves in.

By acknowledging the season we are currently in and adjusting our actions and attitudes accordingly, we can fully embrace the exquisite beauty of both the natural world’s rhythms and the seasons of life within us.

So, let us revel in the splendor of fall and always remember the unique season we are in. Let us live in it as God intended, cherishing every moment.
