Children approach Christmas differently than adults.
Adults are stressed and busy. Children are not.
They rattle packages and finger ornaments (while Mom yells, “Don’t touch that”) and stare at twinkle lights. Christmas cookies get devoured, and a Christmas tree made from an old magazine becomes parents’ heirloom.
They see the wonder of life, the hand of God in every six points of a snowflake. Smiles stretch wider, and eyes twinkle brighter.
Children know life as God created it to be. We who are mature have warped it into a system of oughts, shoulds, and musts.
Jesus knew that children are the secret to a grownup seeing life. His prayers reflected it.
I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.” (Luke 10:21, ESV)
Seeing this season through a child’s eyes will change you. You will recognize the God who invaded the world in an infant body. And you may have more faith.
Take your child in your arms, hold him tight, and see the world as he does. God will bless you in the experience.
